Invisalign® “invisible braces” have changed the way people think about orthodontic treatment. Today, millions of people have had Invisalign to straighten crooked teeth and enjoy more beautiful smiles. But despite its popularity, many people don’t understand what Invisalign is — or how its clear aligners work to straighten teeth. If you’ve been thinking about Surprise Invisalign for yourself or for your child, here’s what you need to know about this revolutionary orthodontic treatment system.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment system that uses a series of custom-fitted, clear plastic aligners to move your teeth into their proper positions. The plastic used in Invisalign’s aligners is called SmartTrackTM and it’s very unique; in fact, it took more than a decade of research to develop it. SmartTrack works to exert continual, gentle force on your teeth to move them into position over time.
Your aligners will be created using state-of-the-art computer-aided design technology. Each aligner is shaped a little differently, and when worn in a specific sequence, they work to move your teeth into alignment. The number of aligners you’ll need will depend on the issues you’re having corrected. Some patients need 40 or more aligners, while others may only need half that number or less.
What problems can be corrected with Surprise Invisalign?
Invisalign’s aligners are the product of decades of research. Today’s aligners can be used to correct a wide variety of alignment and spacing problems, including:
- Gaps between teeth and other uneven spacing issues
- Teeth that are crooked
- Open bites
- Other alignment problems that interfere with bite function
Invisalign might be used to treat a single issue or multiple issues, depending on what you need. Plus, the aligners can be fitted with removable tabs for teeth that haven’t erupted yet, or SmartForceTM enhancements to address areas that need additional pressure to bring teeth into alignment.
What are the benefits of Surprise Invisalign?
Certainly, the single benefit most people think of with Invisalign is their clear, virtually invisible design. When your aligners are in place, they hug the contours of your teeth, making them almost impossible to detect. That’s important for your comfort, and it can also help you feel more confident about your appearance. But that’s not the only benefit. With Surprise Invisalign's clear aligners:
- You won’t have to worry about sore spots on your cheeks and tongue, thanks to the aligners’ completely smooth design.
- You can eat what you want — you take your aligners out when you eat, so there are no dietary restrictions like there are with Surprise braces.
- You can care for your teeth like you always have. Remove your aligners first, then brush and floss as usual.
- All it takes is a gentle brushing with a soft toothbrush to keep your aligners fresh and clean.
- You’ll only have to visit us about once every six weeks for checkups to make sure your treatment is on track.
- You won’t have to worry about uncomfortable adjustments because there are no wires to tighten.
- You’ll get truly custom treatment — every aligner is unique to you, and there is no “one-size-fits-all” treatment.
- Your treatment will probably take less time than treatment with traditional braces — often, considerably less.
With so much to offer, it’s easy to understand why Invisalign is a popular choice for both teens and adults alike.
What is Invisalign treatment like?
Just like with braces, your treatment will begin with an evaluation of your teeth, jaws and bite pattern to make sure Invisalign is the right choice for you. Even though Invisalign can be used to treat many types of spacing and alignment problems, it’s not always the best choice. If you’re a good candidate for Surprise Invisalign, the next step is a careful measurement of your teeth and bite pattern. Your Surprise orthodontist will gather different measurements to send to a dental lab that specializes in making Invisalign aligners. At the lab, a computer uses special software to create a series of detailed, 3D models showing how your teeth need to move over time. Then, your aligners are created using those models.
Once you receive your aligners, you’ll wear each set for about one week, then exchange them for the next set of aligners. You’ll visit us every ten weeks or so for routine checkups. Most patients complete their treatment in about two years — sometimes less!
Surprise Invisalign and your oral health
There’s one other potential advantage of Invisalign treatment, and it’s a big one: By having your teeth straightened and your bite aligned, you just might improve your oral health — potentially for the rest of your life. How? Because straight teeth are easier to keep clean with regular brushing and flossing, which means your at-home care can be a lot more effective in removing food particles and plaque. That means you can also get rid of a lot more bacteria, reducing your risks of tooth decay, gum disease and even tooth loss.
When your bite is aligned, your teeth meet the way they’re supposed to. That means less stress and strain on your jaw joints and facial muscles — along with a reduced risk of chronic jaw and facial pain and a lower risk of developing painful temporomandibular joint disorder or TMJ. So, while the cosmetic benefits of straighter teeth might be better known, it’s important to understand how your treatment might improve your oral health, too.
Invisalign vs. mail-order clear aligners
You’ve probably seen plenty of commercials for mail-order aligners and teledentistry businesses. And you might have been impressed by how convenient it sounds. But before you pull out your credit card, here are some things you should know. Teledentistry has a big drawback — namely, there’s no face-to-face involvement with an orthodontist. It might sound nice to be able to skip appointments, but remember: Orthodontic treatment moves your tooth roots and changes the way your bite functions. It’s not a simple treatment — it’s actually quite complex. And the results you wind up with can affect your oral health for the rest of your life. Considering your smile and your teeth are so important to your well-being, it’s not a good idea to skimp on the orthodontic care you receive. What’s more, when you have Invisalign from a skilled orthodontist, you get the individualized attention you need to get the best results — and to get prompt attention whenever you need it with just a phone call or a quick office visit.
