Here are some of the common questions, misconceptions and mistakes about Invisalign and braces:
Is Invisalign braces?
No. While both Invisalign and braces can be used straighten your teeth and improve your smile, they are not the same thing. Braces are small appliances that are temporarily attached your teeth to aid in their movement. Invisalign, on the other hand, uses a series of clear aligners (similar to clear retainers) to move your teeth. Invisalign is removable allowing you to brush and floss like normal. Braces are not removable so you need to modify your brushing and flossing technique while in treatment.
What about clear braces?
Many people confuse clear braces and Invisalign. Clear braces work similar to metal braces in that they are attached to the teeth. Instead of metal, however, clear braces are manufactured from a ceramic material. Many of the older clear braces were not particularly esthetic. They were big and bulky, used metal inserts and stained easily. Modern clear braces are much smaller in size, no longer require metal inserts and are much more stain resistant. Clear braces are an excellent option for people who want a cosmetic solution but aren’t a good candidate for Invisalign.
Is Invisalign as effective as braces?
It depends. With careful case selection by an experienced Invisalign orthodontist, Invisalign can provide just as good of results as braces. Invisalign is a tool for orthodontic treatment. In the hands of a skilled and knowledgeable orthodontist, you can achieve excellent results with Invisalign. Unfortunately, many people are unaware of the vast difference in education between an orthodontist and a dentist. Orthodontists have completed 2-3 years of additional education specializing in tooth movement and jaw growth. Most orthodontists treat hundreds of orthodontic patients every year. Dentists, on the other hand, take a single 8-hour class to become Invisalign certified. Most of them treat 1-2 Invisalign patients per year.
Invisalign vs Braces Cost?
Typically, the cost of Invisalign is slightly more than cost of braces. Although, many people are surprised at how small the price difference really is. If you would like to know the exact cost for braces or Invisalign, most orthodontists provide consultations for less than $100. Which is better braces or Invisalign?
Unfortunately, there is not a clear-cut answer to this question. There are a number of factors that need to be considered. If esthetics during treatment is a major concern, then Invisalign is the first choice. If you are not particularly disciplined or responsible, then Invisalign may be a poor choice because it needs to be worn 22 hours per day. There are some bite problems that are simply too difficult for Invisalign to correct predictably. Likewise, there are some bite problems that Invisalign actually does a better job of correcting. That is why seeking the advice of an experienced Invisalign orthodontist is so critical to the success of your orthodontic treatment whether you choose braces or Invisalign.
