As the canine experiences root resorption, the tooth’s center of resistance will move incisally. This will decrease the moment to force ratios required by the Phoenix orthodontist for translation, controlled tipping, and root movement of the tooth. For example, the moment to force ratio required for translation of the canine prior to root resorption may have been 10. With the root resorption, the tooth has become shorter and the center of resistance has moved. Now the M/F ratio required by the Phoenix orthodontist for translation may be 7. Clinically, this translates into putting less torque on the canine to achieve the same bodily movement.
As the canine experiences periodontal disease, the tooth’s center of resistance will move apically. The reason being there is less of the tooth surrounded by bone. In this situation, the M/F ratios required for Phoenix orthodontic translation, controlled tipping, and root movement will increase. If before the periodontal disease an M/F ratio of 10 resulted in Phoenix orthodontic translation of the canine, now on M/F ratio of 12 may be required. Clinically, this translates into the Phoenix orthodontist putting more torque on the canine to achieve the same bodily movement.
